Dr. Horng-Jyh (Tigra)Yang joined the Department of Civil Engineering at WVU Tech in 2011. Dr. Yang received his undergraduate civil engineering degree from Chung Yung University and his M.S. from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) in Independent Taiwan. Before leaving his homeland, Dr. Yang practiced as a manager of the Civil Engineering Service Center at NPUST and served as a lieutenant in the Taiwan Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. Yang later earned his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in 2005. After obtaining his Ph.D., Dr. Yang served as a Lecturer and Manager of the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory at UNR. While there, he taught geotechnical engineering courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and participated in soil liquefaction research. Dr. Yang also performed research on large scale soil-structure interaction under simulated earthquake motions.

Dr. Yang’s other research interests in geotechnical engineering include soil property characterizations, large scale soil-structure interaction, in-situ soil testing and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Dr. Yang is a registered professional engineer in the State of Nevada and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
